Software zum Schürfen von Kryptowährungen wie Bitcoin oder Ethereum ist ab sofort in den App-Stores für macOS, iOS, tvOS und watchOS verboten. Das geht aus aktualisierten Richtlinien hervor, die Apple zur Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC 2018 in San Jose veröffentlicht hat.

Auf iOS-Hardware wäre das Kryptomining aufgrund der begrenzten Rechenkapazitäten ohnehin kaum sinnvoll. Wallet-Apps für Kryptowährungen sind jedoch weiterhin erlaubt, solange sie von Organisationen und nicht von Einzelentwicklern bereitgestellt werden. Im neuen Abschnitt "3.1.5 (b) Cryptocurrencies" der App-Store-Richtlinien heißt es im Originalwortlaut:

App-Stores für macOS, iOS, tvOS und watchOS: Verbot für Kryptomining-Software.

"Wallets: Apps may facilitate virtual currency storage, provided they are offered by developers enrolled as an organization. (ii) Mining: Apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining). (iii) Exchanges: Apps may facilitate transactions or transmissions of cryptocurrency on an approved exchange, provided they are offered by the exchange itself."

Weltweit sollen über 4500 Kryptowährungen in Betrieb sein. Kryptowährungen sind nicht unumstritten, vor allem aufgrund der zum Teil heftigen Kursschwankungen, des enormen Rechenaufwands und dem damit verbundenen Stromverbrauch sowie der praktisch nicht vorhandenen staatlichen Regulierung.
